The Prinses-Margriet Canal ( West Frisian Prinses Margriet Canal ) is the Frisian section of a shipping canal in the Netherlands from Lemmer to Groningen . Construction of the canal began in the 1930s. The part of the canal that runs through the province of Groningen is called Van Starkenborghkanaal from Stroobos onwards . This canal was completed in 1938 and officially inaugurated by Queen Wilhelmina .

The last sections of the Prinses-Margriet Canal were laid out after the Second World War , including between the communities of Grouw and Oude Schouw . The Frisian part of the Lemmer – Groningen traffic artery was opened in 1951 and named after Margriet von Oranien-Nassau . In 1965 , the canal's fairway was deepened to 3.8 m so that smaller seaworthy ships can also have access to the Frisian inland waters. Since September 2011 the canal has been suitable for ships of the Großes Rheinschiff (Va) type.

The canal is 64.5 km long and about 70 m wide over long stretches.
