PRISMA ( PR ecursore I per S pettrale della M issione A pplicativa) is an earth observation satellite of the Italian space agency ASI .

The satellite was on March 22, 2019 1:50 UTC with a Vega - launcher from the Guiana Space Center in a polar , sun-synchronous brought orbit. After the systems were calibrated and tested, scientific operation of the satellite began in May 2020.

The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with a hyperspectral camera with 210 mm aperture and 620 mm focal length and an associated panchromatic camera from Leonardo SpA and collects data for the monitoring and prediction of environmental changes. PRISMA is able to record 240 bands (239 spectral bands from 400 to 2505 nm and the panchromatic channel in the range from 400 to 700 nm). The spectral resolution is 12 nanometers. In hyperspectral mode, the spatial resolution is around 30 meters per pixel and with the black and white camera a resolution of five meters per pixel. The swath width is 30 km. It is the forerunner of a new small platform for earth observation satellites.

The satellite was designed and built by OHB Italia, the Italian branch of the German OHB System AG in Tortona (between Genoa and Milan). It has a planned lifespan of 5 years Template: future / in 5 years.
