The private institution Thonberg was founded in 1839 by Eduard Wilhelm Güntz in Thonberg , today Leipzig , as a psychiatric institution for members of the wealthy social classes. It was surrounded by a spacious park. The management was continued in 1863 by his son-in-law Justus Theobald Güntz. The institution was taken over by the Johannishospital in 1888 .

For the year 1903 the general journal for psychiatry and psycho-judicial medicine reported: “In the mental hospital in Leipzig-Thonberg (65 beds) 88 (46 marks, 42 francs) were fed, 79 mentally ill, 3 alcoholics, 6 Nervous patients. "

In 1920 the facility was closed. Up until then, around 2500 patients had been cared for in it.

The Güntz-Park reminds of the facility today. In the park is the Güntz tower, which was built over one of the institute's own water supply wells. A file inventory of 19.58 meters of shelf space has been preserved from the clinic .
