Meng Meng and Jiao Qing
Meng Meng ( Chinese 夢夢 / 梦梦 , Pinyin Mèng mèng - "little dream"; * July 10, 2013 in Chengdu ) and Jiao Qing ( Chinese 嬌 慶 / 娇 庆 , Pinyin Jiāo qìng - "sweetheart"; * July 15, 2010 in Chengdu) are a pair of panda bears (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) . The 15-year permanent loan for the Berlin Zoological Garden was contractually agreed between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People's Republic of China . The bears came to Berlin by special aircraft on June 23, 2017 and have been shown to the public in a newly built panda bear facility since July 6, 2017.
history
Meng Meng and Jiao Qing are the third panda pair in the Berlin Zoo. The 2017 agreement is primarily intended to help bring the threatened species closer to people outside of their habitat and to use them for breeding.
After an acclimatization phase in the new "Panda Garden" facility, which was built for nine million euros , the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chancellor Angela Merkel officially inaugurated the enclosure on July 5, 2017. Since July 6th, all interested parties can view the new additions. On the first day of the public visit, 10,000 people were counted. In order to protect the bears from too many curious people at once, only smaller groups are allowed to enter the facility.
Together with the bears, two Chinese animal keepers and a veterinarian from Berlin Zoo and extensive bamboo supplies traveled to Berlin and landed at Schönefeld Airport . This makes the Berlin Zoo the only zoological garden in Germany that can show giant pandas.
Meng Meng and Jiao Qing come from the Chinese breeding station Chengdu , where both were born. The female Meng Meng (stud book number: 868) weighed 105 grams at birth. The father animal was Yong Yong ( Chinese 勇勇 / 勇勇 , Pinyin yǒng yong - "brave", stud book number: 584, * 2004) and the mother animal Er Yatou ( Chinese 二 丫頭 / 二 丫头 , Pinyin èr yātou - "second sister", stud book number : 401, * 1993). When she arrived in Berlin, Meng Meng weighed 88 kg according to the stud book and her character traits were given as “round face, short nose, a loving personality, behaves as a big sister, knows how to sell, likes to be photographed, likes to pose in front of the camera” . Jiao Qing (Stud Book Number: 769) weighed 108 grams when he was born. The father animal was Ke Di (stud book number: 386), the mother animal was Jiao Zi (stud book number: 425). When he arrived in Berlin, Jiao Qing weighed 112 kg according to the stud book and his character traits were given as "round face, extroverted, lively, sometimes irritable, likes sport and is very cheeky".
Young animals
On the evening of August 31, 2019, Meng Meng gave birth to two young animals. In December it became known that both young animals are male and have been named Meng Xiang (Chinese: 夢想 / 梦想, Pinyin mèng xiǎng, longed-for dream ') and Meng Yuan (Chinese: 夢 圓 / 梦 圆, Pinyin Mèng yuán, dream fulfilled' ) were baptized. Their nicknames are Pit and Paule.
