The private clinic Wyss (formerly private mental hospital Münchenbuchsee) is a psychiatric clinic in Münchenbuchsee in Switzerland. Founded in 1845, it is the oldest psychiatric clinic in the Canton of Bern. The family stock corporation employs around 260 people. Around 2000 patients are treated annually.

history

In 1845, the doctor Johann Caspar Straub (1792–1855) built a “remedial and catering facility for the mentally ill” in his house. At that time, there were eight other private hospitals in the canton of Bern, all of which disappeared again in the course of the 19th century. In 1855 the regional state sanatorium and nursing home Waldau was established .

Johann Caspar Straub felt obliged to the ideas of the Enlightenment . Therefore, he relied on a repression-free treatment of the inmates. After Straub's death, his widow Anna Straub-Reber (1819–1884) took over the business. Under her leadership, the institution expanded rapidly. In 1877, the German psychiatrist Adolph Erlenmeyer described it as the largest and most frequented private insane asylum in Switzerland in his work "Overview of the Swiss insane and idiot institutions". Anna Straub died in 1884 and bequeathed the property to her niece Katharina Wyss-Reber. The clinic has been owned by the descendants of the Wyss family for five generations.

Head of the clinic were u. a .:

  • Georg Glaser (1854–1933), chief physician 1878–1894 and 1912–1920 (first director of the Münsingen insane asylum from 1895–1912 )
  • Walter Morgenthaler (1882–1965), chief physician 1921–1925 (patron of the schizophrenic artist Adolf Wölfli )
  • Paul Plattner (1907–1980), chief physician 1940–1972 (founder of the Pro Mente Sana Foundation )

At the end of the 20th century, the clinic got into an economically critical situation. From 1992 the extensive renovation and expansion of the infrastructure began. Over 20 million Swiss francs were invested in modernizing the buildings. At the same time, new therapies were set up and two psychiatric day clinics were opened (1993 and 2007) and two outpatient services in Bern (1996) and Biel (2007).

Quality management

In 1996, the clinic began to set up a quality management system together with the Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Neuchâtel. Since 2001, it has been assessed every three to four years by external experts using the EFQM model . In 2009 the Wyss private clinic reached the range of 450 to 500 EFQM points. In 2006 the clinic was the first psychiatric clinic to become a member of the Swiss Leading Hospitals Association due to its performance in quality management. In 2010, the quality work of the Wyss private clinic was awarded the third prize at the congress of the European Association of Hospital Directors (EVKD).

As part of quality management, an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 was set up in 2007 . The first certification took place in 2009. Compared to 2005, the clinic reduced CO 2 emissions by 25% by 2010 .
