Prix Joseph Gantrelle
The Prix Joseph Gantrelle was founded in 1890 by the Académie royale de Belgique (Royal Belgian Academy) and is awarded every five years for a work of classical philology . The namesake Joseph Gantrelle (born January 18, 1809 in Echternach ( Luxembourg ), † February 24, 1893 in Gent ( Belgium )) was a professor emeritus of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Ghent .
The focus of the award-winning work should be a forgotten language of antiquity. In addition to the Prix Lucien de Reinach, the Gantrelle Prize is the most important award for classical scholars in French-speaking countries. The last award ceremony took place in 2004.
The prize is endowed with 3,000 euros and is actually reserved for Belgian citizens. However, in 2000 the German Graecist Oliver Primavesi was honored.
