pro musica antiqua

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

pro musica antiqua was an " early music festival" organized by the ARD broadcasting company Radio Bremen from 1960 to 2001 .

history

Hans Otte (1926–2007) founded the festival in 1960 after he had become the main department head of music at Radio Bremen in 1959, when he was only 32 years old. The festival owes its name to the Brussels ensemble Pro Musica Antiqua of the conductor Safford Cape , which had been experimenting with historical performance practice since the 1930s and documented this, for example, for the archive production of the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft . In 1961, in the second year, the pro musica nova festival, also organized by Radio Bremen, was added as a counterpart , which - as the name suggests - was dedicated to contemporary music . From 1962 the two festivals were held alternately as biennials each year , so that pro musica antiqua took place in the odd years and pro musica nova in the even years .

Hans Otte directed pro musica antiqua for almost a quarter of a century, until 1983. The last festival pro musica antiqua was in 2001, after which the series was discontinued.
