Sample digger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sampling gauges are devices for taking samples for sampling from deliveries of (mostly granular) bulk goods ( grain , sugar , cocoa , beans, nuts, etc.). There are different versions, depending on the area of application:

  1. Pocket piercer: is a tube open on both sides with a length of 20 to 50 cm and a diameter of 5 to 30 mm. One end is cut at an angle of about 20 °. The bag digger is used by the sea freight inspector to take samples from bags. The diameter and length of the tool depend on the type of sample. The sample spike is inserted between the meshes of the sack as far as possible in order to keep damage to a minimum. The sample to be taken runs out of the piercer into a prepared container or into the hand. After the sample has been taken, the existing hole is closed with a packing needle and coarse thread.
  2. Mechanical sampler: consists of two tubes pushed into one another with individual chambers with openings. The two tubes can be rotated against each other to close the openings. The mechanical sampler is used in warehouses, bulk floors, trucks, rail wagons, etc. It is used to sample pellets, grain and other grains. To take a sample, the closed piercer is pierced into the material and then opened by turning the inner tube. After filling, but before pulling out, the sample spout is closed again and then pulled out. This ensures that different layers do not mix before analysis. Samples can be drawn manually from a depth of up to 2 m.
