Packing pins of various sizes

A packing needle is a needle for sewing with coarse thread made from hemp or jute .

Packing needles can reach a length of 20 cm, are very thick, have a large needle eye and a flattened, slightly curved tip that is rather blunt so that the threads of the fabric to be sewn are not damaged. The main area of application is the sewing and closing of holes in sacks for different goods ( cocoa , coffee, etc.) made of jute that have been made by piercing a sample stick . The packing needle is also used to close the bags after they have been filled. The packing needle is an indispensable aid when manufacturing packages with a cover made of fabric (jute, coarse linen ). The combination of one or two packing needles with a work knife in a sheath is called "cutlery" by stevedores and storage workers .

The packing needle is also used by upholsterers , for example when garnishing and sewing fabric lines.
