Luigi Gatti (composer)

Luigi Gatti (born June 11, 1740 in Lazise , † March 1, 1817 in Salzburg ) was an Italian classical composer and Catholic priest .

Life

Luigi Gatti was born in 1740 in Lazise, the son of the organist Francesco della Gatto. He received his education in Mantua , where he was ordained a priest and tenor at the Church of Santa Barbara. The Kapellmeister Giovanni Battista Pattoni (1713–1773) mentioned him in 1768 as a "reliable tenor, ... good organist and composer". His first opera, Alessandro nell'Indie , was also performed in Mantua. In 1770 Gatti met the Mozart family on their first trip to Italy and copied one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masses.

Since the death of Hofkapellmeister Giuseppe Lolli (1701–1778), Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Graf Colloredo (1732–1812 ) looked for a successor in all Italian cities as well as in Vienna , Prague and Königgrätz , and because Ferdinando Bertoni (1725–1813) was not available , became Luigi Gatti (last) prince-archbishop Hofkapellmeister in Salzburg in 1783 (on the recommendation of Anton Theodor von Colloredo-Waldsee-Mels , Archbishop of Olmütz ) . The result was a certain dissatisfaction with Leopold Mozart , whose application for this position had been rejected. Between 1801 and 1803, Gatti helped Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's sister Nannerl in the search for previously unknown works by Mozart. In this context he corresponded several times with the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house until 1804 .

It was quite common at the time to underlay parts of popular operas with a sacred text, which in the 18th century was not considered offensive and was understood more as an appreciation of the music. Gatti put together his creation mass by reworking parts of Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation .

Only a few works were published during Gatti's lifetime, although numerous manuscripts and copies were available in the Salzburg archives.

Luigi Gatti died on March 1, 1817 and was buried in the Sebastian Cemetery, Salzburg.
