Probreviceps macrodactylus is a species of amphibian from the genus Probreviceps .
description
The front head is obtuse triangular and shorter than the horizontal eye diameter. The head-trunk length corresponds to 8 to 9 times the horizontal eye diameter and reaches 5 millimeters. The interorbital space is wider than an upper eyelid. The second finger is significantly longer than the first and very little longer than the fourth. The fifth toe is well developed and as long as or longer than the oval, flat medial metatarsal cusp, which is itself somewhat as long as the distance from the tip to the first toe. The subarticular bumps on the fingers and toes are well developed. The skin is finely grained. The top is solid brown or blackish. The throat and chest are dark brown or black and always darker than the top. Otherwise the underside is whitish or brownish.
Occurrence
The species occurs in eastern Tanzania in the eastern and western Usambara Mountains , Uluguru , Nguru Mountains and Udzungwa Mountains at altitudes of 900 to 2100 meters.
Systematics
The species Probreviceps macrodactylus was described by Fritz Nieden in 1926 as Breviceps macrodactylus . Parker placed the species in the genus Probreviceps in 1931 . Another synonym is Breviceps usambaricus Barbour and Loveridge, 1928.
Hazards and protective measures
This species is seriously threatened in its existence due to the conversion of its already limited habitat into forest and agricultural crops as well as from fires. The IUCN lists this species as Endangered . To protect the species, protected areas such as Amani and Nilo Nature Reserves and Mkingu Nature Reserve have been designated.
