Prodrive F1 is the Formula 1 project of Prodrive Ltd. It was planned to take part in the 2008 Formula 1 season as the twelfth team . This first attempt failed because of the controversy between the then active Formula 1 teams, who could not agree on a new Concorde Agreement that allowed the use of "customer cars" (vehicles that were not developed by the team themselves, but purchased).

For the 2010 season , Prodrive F1 again applied for a place in Formula 1, but was not considered by the FIA .

Team principal would be the owner of Prodrive Ltd. David Richards , former team principal of the BAR Honda team. Prodrive Ltd. has been active in motorsport since the 1980s. As a partner of Subaru , the Prodrive team was able to win three drivers 'and three constructors' titles in the World Rally Championship .

history

The Prodrive F1 team was awarded the twelfth team on April 28, 2006 and thus prevailed against suggestions from Paul Stoddart , Eddie Jordan and Jean Alesi, among others . FIA President Max Mosley justified the decision with the money security and planning of the Prodrive team. It is groundbreaking, says Mosley. At this event it was also confirmed that in future only twelve teams will be allowed to compete for safety reasons.

Team boss David Richards pursued the goal of being competitive with a budget of only 100 million dollars. Rumors brought Prodrive into connection with McLaren-Mercedes as an engine and chassis supplier - whose team boss Ron Dennis had confirmed plans for a cooperation. Also, Aston Martin has been mentioned as a possible partner because Prodrive already the Aston Martin DBR9 for the FIA GT Championship builds and co-owner David Richards is the sports car manufacturer.

However, the entry of Prodrive into Formula 1 failed in November 2007 due to a legal dispute over the registration of the team. The then made proposal by Richards to enter with Prodrive in the middle of the 2008 season was rejected by the FIA. Richards stuck to his Formula 1 plans. After Honda withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 2008, Richards held talks about buying the Honda Racing F1 Team. However , according to Richards, the numerous far-reaching rule changes for the 2009 season made conditions too unsafe, so he refrained from joining.

For 2010, Prodrive registered again for Formula 1 and thus started a second attempt. However, Prodrive was not included on the entry list published by the FIA on June 12, 2009. Only three of the 15 applications from potential new teams were successful.
