Profundulus ( Latin : profundus = deep) is a genus of freshwater fish from the order of the toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes). They are found in streams and rivers on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of Central America in Mexico , Guatemala, and Honduras .
features
Profundulus species have a stocky body and are 7.5 to 11.5 inches long. The dorsal and anal fins are small, rounded and symmetrically opposite each other far back. The dorsal fin is supported by ten to 16 fin rays. In addition, the dorsal fin has one to three more rudimentary fin rays. In the male the dorsal fin is more developed, in the females the anal fin. In addition, the females get bigger and are stronger. The caudal fin is short and strong and covered by small scales at the base. There are 31 to 39 scales along the lateral line organ . The fertilization is external.
Systematics
The species of the genus were temporarily placed under the genera Adinia or Fundulus . Later a genus was created within the family Fundulidae . Today they are placed in the monotypical family Profundulidae. Profundulus is considered to be a sister group of the highland piglets (Goodeidae).
