The Fundulidae ( Latin : "Fundus" = soil) are a family of North and Central American toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes).

features

The fish are 3 to 12.5 inches long. The dorsal fin, supported by 7 to 16 fin rays, lies above the middle of the body, the beginning of its base in front of or near the anal fin. The anal fin has 9 to 15 soft rays. The maxillary is not straight but twisted. Its inner part, lying on the abdomen, points forward and is often covered with clear bumps.

distribution

They live in the waters of the North and Central American plains, north to southeast Canada , in Mexico (up to the Yucatan ), on Cuba and Bermuda . They prefer to stay in heavily overgrown waters. Some species of the genus Fundulus also go into brackish water or the coastal sea water.
