Carmine Coppola , the father of director Francis Ford Coppola, worked on the soundtracks for all three films in the Godfather trilogy . The music for Der Pate III , which he composed with Nino Rota , was one of his last works before his death on April 26, 1991. One of the pieces for the soundtrack was the classic piece Love Theme from the Godfather III . Promise Me You'll Remember is a version edited with lyrics by John Bettis and sung by actor and singer Harry Connick junior in the film. The song was produced by Connick junior himself and Stephan R. Goldman. Lennie Niehaus took care of the arrangement .
The song was nominated for Best Movie Song at the 1991 Academy Awards, but lost to Stephen Sondheim's Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man) from Dick Tracy . It was also nominated at the 1991 Golden Globe Awards , but lost to Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory from Blaze of Glory .
