Propoietids

In Greek mythology, the Propoetiden are the daughters of Propoetus from the city of Amathus . They are treated in the ancient literature in Ovid ( Metamorphoses 10,220–242).

The propoetids are considered to be the first women of antiquity to publicly prostitute themselves . After they had refused to offer worship and sacrifice to the goddess of beauty Venus (or Aphrodite ), Venus imposed a punishment on them, as a result of which the propoetids lost all sense of shame , unrestrained public disclosure of their bodies, and soon no man wanted to have anything to do with them . Venus then turned her into cold stone.

Ovid's Metamorphoses is followed by the story of Pygmalion , who for this reason no longer wants to know anything about women (cf. the aversion to women misogyny that has increased to hatred ).
