Protectin (synonymous CD59 , MAC-inhibitory protein , MAC-IP , membrane inhibitor of reactive lysis , MIRL ) is a surface protein from the complement system .

properties

Protectin inhibits the formation of the membrane attack complex by binding to complement component C8 and / or complement component C9 , whereby no pore is finally formed. It is also involved in the activation of T cells , in which it is bound to a tyrosine kinase . The soluble form of protectin found in the urine still binds to the complement proteins, but hardly inhibits the development of the membrane attack complex. Protectin has a GPI anchor . By alternative splicing of several arise isoforms .

Mutations that lead to the loss of the GPI anchor reduce the concentration of protectin and decay-accelerating factor on erythrocytes , causing paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria .

Some enveloped viruses such as HIV , the human cytomegalovirus, and the vaccinia virus use cellular protectin for immune evasion to prevent a complement reaction .
