Protestantism in Ethiopia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Protestants are mostly known by name in Ethiopia through the Pentay ( Amharic P'ent'ay , short for the Pentecostal movement ), although Pentecostals are a very small minority in comparison.

"Pentay" is a term for Christians who do not belong to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo , the Ethiopian Orthodox Tehadeso Church, the Roman Catholic or the Ethiopian Catholic Church .

number

The total number of Protestants in Ethiopia was believed to be between 14 and 16 million in 2005 and has increased since then. The Kale Heywèt Church had around 6,700,000 followers in 2019. The strongly growing Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus , which is Lutheran, had about 1.5 in 2005; 5.5 million members in 2013 and 8.3 million in 2019.

Protestant denominations were established relatively frequently in the region of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples . Some urban areas were also evangelized relatively quickly in the past. In Gambela , Mekane Yesus supporters make up about 60% of the population. The Protestant minority, however, compared to the Muslims, has a low growth rate of around 6.7% per year.

Denominations

Other large Protestant churches in Ethiopia are the Meserete Kristos , the Gubae Egziabehare , the Mulu Wongel and the Misgana Church . Smaller Protestant denominations are the United Pentecostal Church , Full Gosp-Mulu Wengel , the Heywèt Birhane , the Seventh-day Adventists , the Sefer Genet , Churches of Christ , Birhane Wengel and the Emmanuel Baptist Churches .

Anglicanism is represented in Ethiopia by the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East ; Ethiopia is part of the diocese of Egypt, which also includes other countries in the Horn of Africa and North Africa. There is an episcopal church in the capital Addis Ababa and one in the city of Gambela .

Legal status

According to the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, there is official freedom of religion.

In regions with a predominantly Islamic population, however, Christians often suffer from resistance from local authorities and the repression of radical Muslims. There are also brutal murders of Pentay Christians in rural areas, which are overlooked by the Ethiopian government and kept quiet by international organizations. It is also noted that Pentay Christians have been murdered by militant Islamists because they refused to renounce their faith.
