The protocol route is the regular or one-off route that holders of high state offices cover on an official mission, for example during a state visit from the airport to the headquarters of the host head of state. The term is derived from the diplomatic protocol or the domestic political protocol . The protocol route is determined from the point of view of safety , but also the appearance and is subject to special regulations, for example it is flagged during state visits .

The protocol routes in the German Democratic Republic , which were run at great expense, became particularly well known , in particular the route taken by members of the Politburo from their residence in Wandlitz to the headquarters of the SED Central Committee in Berlin and the route taken by state guests between Berlin-Schönefeld Airport and the Niederschönhausen Palace , the guest house the GDR government.
