Proton (satellite)
The proton ( Russian Протон ) was a series of four Soviet research satellites that were supposed to investigate the high-energy cosmic particle radiation . They were remarkable for their size and mass of 8.5 tons (16 tons for Proton 4). The UR-500 launcher, which was later named after the satellites as the Proton rocket , was used for the first time .
