Proton is Wine- based open source software developed by Valve . The aim of Proton is to be able to play Steam games that were created for Windows also under Linux . Proton used to implement DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 , the computer graphics - programming volcano . This is intended to increase compatibility and performance. In addition, Proton offers better multithreading , controller and full screen support than Wine, according to Valve . So far, Proton has only been integrated into Steam for Linux, but it can also be compiled for macOS. As of early 2019, Proton can also be used to play non-Steam games. However, Steam still has to be installed for this. Since then it has also been possible to use Proton, although a version for Linux is available. This function is intended for games that have been poorly optimized or are no longer being developed.

The current compatibility status of a game is displayed in the Proton database Protondb. This database is mainly filled by users. The database also provides an overview of all games and how far Linux is already compatible.
