Processivity

Processivity is a characteristic of enzymes . The processivity of an enzyme is higher, the more catalytic cycles it can go through without falling off its substrate .

Examples

  • Myosin II has a low processivity, after each ATPase cycle it falls off of F-actin.
  • DNA polymerase has a relatively high processivity, several thousand nucleotides can be polymerized onto the nascent DNA strand without the polymerase falling off. (The various DNA polymerases differ in terms of their processivity. The subunits beta-clamp or PCNA , for example, increase processivity )
