Psallus flavellus is a type of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 3.5 to 3.9 millimeters long. The genus Psallus includes small, often red, gray or dark brown speckled bugs, in which the pronotum and the hemielytres are covered with pale, scale-like hairs and in which the thorns of the rails ( tibia ) arise from black points. The species of the genus can often only be differentiated with difficulty or not at all on the basis of external characteristics. Most of the time, however, the species can be narrowed down based on the host plant. Psallus flavellus has a relatively strong orange-red basic color. However, the reliable determination requires the use of a microscope.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe from southern Scandinavia to the north of the Mediterranean and east to Russia. It was introduced into North America by humans. It occurs everywhere in Germany and is not uncommon. It is widespread in Austria, but evidence is still missing in some places.
Way of life
Psallus flavellus lives on common ash ( Fraxinus excelsior ) and sometimes appears there together with Psallus lepidus . It can only be found on trees that are already fruiting. The adults appear relatively late from June to August.
