Psalmopoeus emeraldus is a probably tree-dwelling tarantula species from Colombia . It was described in 1903 by Reginald Innes Pocock . The holotype is a female spider found in the area of the emerald mines of Muzo . The species has not been proven by any other author to date. To date only the female is known.

features

The described female is 2.8 centimeters long from the biting claws to the spinnerets and therefore may not be fully grown. It is evenly olive green on the top and sooty black on the underside. The carapace is as long as the leg links patella and tibia of one leg of the first or fourth pair of legs combined. The legs of the first and fourth pair of legs are almost the same length (3.7 and 3.8 millimeters, respectively). The stridulation spines on the maxillae are very close to the fringes that face the mouth opening. This is similar to the related species Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus . The inner thorns are longer and narrower than the rest. In this way they differ from those of Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus , which has short, thick and curved thorns at this point.

Way of life

There is no information about the way of life of the species. Like other species of the genus Psalmopoeus , it probably lives on trees and as a tarantula it probably feeds primarily on smaller invertebrates.

Systematics

Psalmopoeus emeraldus is considered a separate species of the genus Psalmopoeus within the tarantula. The first scientific description comes from Reginald Innes Pocock from 1903 using a single female from the area around the emerald mines of Muzo in Colombia; no further specimens have been described so far.

The scientific species name is derived from the English name for emerald ("emerald").
