Pseudophoxinus handlirschi (Turkish common name: Ciçek) is a most likely extinct fish species from the carp family (Cyprinidae). It was endemic to the Eğirdir Gölü (Eğirdir Lake) in Turkey. The species name refers to the Austrian entomologist and paleontologist Anton Handlirsch (1865-1935).

features

Pseudophoxinus handlirschi reached a total length of 8 to 12 cm. The body was oval, slightly spindle-shaped and covered with small scales. The small mouth was terminal or pointed slightly upwards. The last ray of thorns of the dorsal fin was not well developed. The large head was about 1/4 the length of the body without the tail. The eye diameter was about 1/6 the length of the head. The caudal fin was slightly forked. The back was brownish or blackish. The flanks were light gray with a bluish sheen. The belly was dull white. All fins were dark gray.

status

Eğirdir minnow is on the IUCN "extinct" in the category ( extinct listings). The last commercial catches took place between 1958 and 1961, during which time 175 tons of this species were fished. After a last sighting in the early 1970s, the next searches in the 1980s no longer provided any evidence. Between 1990 and 2010 several searches were carried out in the Eğirdir Gölü and in the inflows and outflows Kayaağzı, Karaot, Mücevre, Yalvaç, Gelendost and Çayköy, which were also unsuccessful. The main cause of its disappearance is believed to be the pursuit of the introduced pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ) in the mid-1950s.
