PsychSpider was a search engine for scientific content on psychology operated for more than a decade by the Leibniz Center for Psychological Information and Documentation (ZPID) since 2000 . It offered access to over 1.2 million documents (as of 2011), which came from both the freely accessible and the deep web . PsychSpider was primarily a web search engine, but structured bibliographic data was also indexed. Its operation was discontinued in favor of the free, multilingual search portal PubPsych .

Function and structure

PsychSpider concentrated on documents from the field of psychology and relevant neighboring areas, which led to the creation of vertical collections (restriction to individual areas and attempt to capture them in their full depth). The indexed websites were assigned to the collections according to specified criteria, which could be searched for using the extended search interface. In retrieval, a heuristic was used to weight the search term with a corresponding relevance ranking. The search engine had u. a. via features such as “Boolean operators”, natural language inputs, relevance evaluation of the results, importable and exportable indexes, parametric search and automatic categorization. The scope was variable, over 1250 servers from German-speaking countries were searched, and updates were made regularly.

index

The search engine's index was made up of the following resources:

  • psychological institutes and institutions
  • psychological journals
  • Professional societies, specialist groups
  • Personal homepages of psychologists
  • Events
  • Websites with content dealing with psychology and psychological topics
  • PSYNDEX , the literature database for psychology
  • MEDLINE (Records with major topic psychology)
  • Research data such as can be found in PsychData, for example
  • Psychology-relevant bibliographic records from the ERIC Collection (Education Resources Information Center)
  • Data from the SSG OPAC (Special Collection Area Psychology Online Public Access Catalog)

Uses

PsychSpider gadget

In addition to the already mentioned option of selecting and deselecting collections, it was possible to search specifically for fields such as "Author", "Title", "Keyword" and / or the content of the "www.zpid.de" page in PsychSpider. In addition, the search engine had the advantage that a large part of the index was based on manual intellectual work, so that a high quality and relevance of the hits could be guaranteed. In addition to the direct browser search, there were various other options to use PsychSpider. So there was an integrated search on the ZPID Facebook presence. In addition, PsychSpider could be integrated directly into the browser as an integrated search service using a plug-in. A gadget was offered for webmasters, which could be integrated into a website and offered a direct search option.

Successor: PubPsych

The multilingual psychology search portal PubPsych has replaced PsychSpider. It continues to contain much of the content from PsychSpider. It is a joint project coordinated by ZPID with the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST-CNRS) from France , the Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales (CCHS-CSIC) from Spain , and the National Library of Norway (NLN) than Norway . It contains licensed psychological database segments from the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) from the USA , and Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) from the Netherlands .
