Psychogeography
The Psychogeography examined the impact the architectural and geographical environment on the perception that mental experience and the behavior has. Psychogeographic research takes place at the interface between the fields of art , architecture , geography and psychology . The term was mainly coined by the artist group Situationist International , in which the former London Psychogeographic Society was merged. The philosopher Paul Virilio later a. a. the psychogeography of bunkers and fortifications (see also his book Speed and Politics ). Today psychogeography finds z. B. takes place in architectural theory , is a topic of urban planning , but is still considered in art (e.g. in discussions about art in public space ).
Psychogeography and the Situationist Artist Movement
The psychogéographique Guide de Paris by Guy Debord is Paris is experienced psycho geographically. The districts are cut up and parts are missing, corresponding perhaps to trips in the metro , where you get on somewhere and get off somewhere else and cannot see where you are going, or walking through an urban area cut up by highways. Another picture by Chombart de Lauwe shows a Paris city map, on which all the routes a student covered in a year are drawn - the result is a triangle repeated a hundred times between apartment, university and conservatory, supplemented by a few more lines. The map graphically made the loneliness of a predictable, isolated life visible.
Another characteristic was the request of the situationists to intentionally get lost in foreign cities in order to expose themselves to new discoveries, experiences and encounters, or to use city maps of other cities there for (dis) orientation. In their view, urban built-up space was the visible expression of the (supra) rational thinking that they criticized. Every building, such as prefabricated housing estates or shopping centers , therefore conveyed views about people ( image of human beings ) and subliminal requirements for people traveling there to behave in a certain way.
