Pterocactus araucanus is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pterocactus araucanus forms several spherical to pear-shaped shoot segments. They stand on top of each other in short chains, are gray-brown and are 3 to 4 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The glochids are inconspicuous. The eight comb-like arranged thorns are yellowish with a dark tip and are up to 3 millimeters long.

The reddish brown flowers are up to 4 centimeters in diameter. The spherical fruits have a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pterocactus araucanus is distributed in Argentina in the plains of the Neuquén provinces , in the western part of Río Negro and in the northwestern part of Chubut at altitudes of 200 to 600 meters. The species was first described in 1964 by Alberto Castellanos .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
