Pterocactus megliolii is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pterocactus megliolii forms cylindrical and rarely articulated shoots. They are brownish green and are 3 to 10 inches long and 0.5 to 1.0 inches in diameter. The heavily woolly areoles have few or no glochids . There are 4 to 5 light to dark brown central spines per areole, but sometimes they are missing. The 10 to 20 glassy radial spines are close to the shoots and are up to 2 millimeters long. The roots are bulbous and up to 15 centimeters long.

The wheel-shaped, yellow flowers are up to 3 centimeters in diameter. The fruits do not grow larger than the shoot strength.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pterocactus megliolii is distributed in central Argentina in the province of San Juan north of the city of San Juan on very stony, barren and dry areas at altitudes of 500 to 1000 meters. The species was first described in 1971 by Roberto Kiesling .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
