Pterygoplichthys ( Syn .: Glyptoperichthys ) is a genus of fish within the family of the armor catfish (Loricariidae).

description

In the genus established by Gill in 1858 , over 15 species are summarized. Although they are strongly reminiscent of the representatives of the genus Hypostomus , they can easily be distinguished from them by the higher number of dorsal fin rays ( Pterygoplichthys : 10 to 13, Hypostomus : about 7). Some species can reach over 18 inches. The basic color varies between black and brown, depending on the species, the body of most species is covered with spots or dot patterns. The genus is found in rivers and lakes in South America , usually near the rainforest.
