The Pterygoplichthini are a tribe of the South American armor catfish (Loricariidae). They occur in Panama and in South America, so almost in the entire distribution area of the armor catfish, but not in the three Guayanas and in the coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil .

features

The species of the Pterygoplichthini have a typical armor catfish shape with a flattened body and a flat head with a suction mouth below. Their dorsal fin has more fin spines (9–14) than those of the other armor catfish (6–8) and is higher, which is why they are often called sailing shield catfish in German . The diagnostic feature of the group is the enlarged stomach, which is connected to the posterior abdomen by a ligament of connective tissue. The Pterygoplichthini are up to 60 centimeters long.

Way of life

The Pterygoplichthini occur in cool mountain streams as well as in low-oxygen, standing water of the plains, especially in white water rivers . The individual species often have a very large distribution area and colonize, across distribution barriers, different river systems with different water chemistry. They spawn in caves that they dig in the banks of the rivers. The males take care of the brood and guard and clean the spawn .

External system

The Pterygoplichthini are in the crown group of the Hypostominae and are the sister group of the Ancistrini , with whom they share the arrangement of the bone plates on the gill covers. The systematic position is illustrated by the following cladogram :

Internal system

The Pterygoplichthini currently comprise only two genera, which differ in the number of dorsal fin rays:
