Ptolemy of Nepi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to legend, Ptolemy of Nepi († allegedly in the 1st century in Nepi ) was the first bishop of Nepi and a martyr .

Ptolemy is said to have been appointed bishop by Apostle Peter in Nepi, around 50 km north of Rome . There he was martyred under Emperor Nero , together with a philosopher named Romanus , whom he had converted . The historical existence of Ptolemy is questionable; possibly it is a later invention to ascribe a more venerable age and an apostolic foundation to the diocese of Nepi. Ptolemy is the city saint of Nepi. His bones should be under Pope Paul III. found in Nepi in the 16th century. The saint's feast day is August 24th .
