Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius (that's the authentic form of the name; * probably around 260/270; † probably before 335) was a late antique poet. He wrote in Latin and was an early representative of the character poem genre .

The poet Porfyrius is identified with a Porfyrius Optatianus, who is attested for 329 and 333 as praefectus urbi .

Through a collection of particularly skilful figure poems on Constantine the Great , which he later expanded, he was able to return from his exile in 325. His work, of which a total of 28 poems have been preserved, is regarded as a style model for the subsequent Latin poets of such carmina figurata , including Venantius Fortunatus , Alcuin and Hrabanus Maurus , the latter of whom explicitly referred to Porfyrius as a model for his “scattering of letters “( Litteras spargere ) relates.
