Publius Besius Betuinianus Gaius Marius Memmius Sabinus (full name form Publius Bessius Publi filius Quirina Betuinianus Gaius Marius Memmius Sabinus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations in his career are known through an inscription dated 110/114.

The military career of Betuinianus consisted of the usual Tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . He was first prefect of a Cohors I Raetorum . Then he was a military tribune in the Legio X Gemina . The third stage was the post of prefect of the Ala Dardanorum , which was stationed in the province of Moesia inferior . For his achievements in the Dacian Wars he received several military awards from Trajan : a Corona muralis , a Corona vallaris , twice the Hasta pura and a vexillum argenteum .

After finishing his military career, Betuinianus took over positions in administration. He was initially procurator of the imperial mint; this post was linked to an annual income of 100,000 sesterces . He then became a procurator in the province of Baetica ; this post was associated with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces. He then took on a position as procurator in the administration of the five percent inheritance tax ( vicesima hereditatium ). Most recently he was deputy governor of the province of Mauretania Tingitana ( procurator pro legato ).

Remarks

  1. There were three units with this designation (see Cohors I Raetorum ). The inscription does not reveal which unit Betuinianus commanded. Hans-Georg Pflaum assigns it to the Cohors I Raetorum (Raetia) .
  2. According to Hans-Georg Pflaum, Betuinianus was awarded a Corona and a Hasta pura at the end of the first Dacian War when he was prefect of the Cohors I Raetorum . He received the other awards at the end of the Second Dacian War when he was Prefect of the Ala.
