Publius Palpellius Clodius Quirinalis
Publius Palpellius Clodius Quirinalis (full name form Publius Palpellius Publi filius Maecia Clodius Quirinalis ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Through an inscription that was found in Tergeste and which is dated to 50/56 AD, individual stations of his career are known.
Quirinalis had that of Primus Pilus in the Legio XX recorded in the inscription as the first position of his military career . He was then accepted into the knighthood and promoted to the Tribunus militum in Legio VII Claudia pia fidelis ; he must have started service in VII Claudia after 42, as the Legion received the pia fidelis award that year as a result of the uprising of Lucius Arruntius Camillus Scribonianus . Quirinalis then became Augusti procurator and prefect of the fleet. He is mentioned by Tacitus in the annals ; it shows that he was prefect of the Roman fleet stationed in Ravenna and that he committed suicide in 56.
Quirinalis was adopted by a Publius Palpellius , was enrolled in the Maecia tribe and probably came from Istria . An (incompletely preserved) inscription with his career was found in Altinum . Another inscription from Tergeste lists a Publius Clodius Quirinalis who was a soldier in the Legio XV Apollinaris ; possibly he was the father of Quirinalis.
