The Puclaro dam (Spanish Embalse Puclaro ) is a reservoir in the valley of Elqui in the region Coquimbo in Chile . The dam was built in 1999 for irrigation. The provincial capital La Serena is about 50 km downstream . The reservoir target is 432 msnm. The surface of the reservoir is 720 ha.
purpose
The Coquimbo region has a Mediterranean and arid climate. The Atacama Desert begins further north. Through the Andes chain , meltwater is available all year round to irrigate agricultural areas, so that fruit and wine in particular can be grown. However, the winter precipitation fluctuates strongly, so that in 1999 the Puclaro dam was completed to regulate the flow of the Elqui. The village of Gualliguaica was moved to the shore of the lake. The old railway line from La Serena to Vicuña is below the lake level. With the construction of the Puclaro dam, the irrigated area in the valley was more than doubled to 20,700 hectares.
Sports
Due to the strong winds from noon and the ban on motor boats, the lake is an excellent area for windsurfers.
hike
A hiking trail that ends in a bay runs along the right bank of the lake from Gualliguaica.
