details
Planning and companies involved
The Panamanian Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP, German: Ministry of Public Buildings) began in November 2000 with a tender for the construction of a new canal crossing. The building was supposed to be completed in 29 months so that it could be inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the first ship passage in 1914 on August 15, 2004. In March 2002, a consortium made up of TY Lin International and the Louis Berger Group was awarded the contract for the design. After differences of opinion between TY Lin and the MOP, the implementation planning was assigned to the Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner office. The actual construction was carried out by Bilfinger Berger Ingenieurbau GmbH in cooperation with the Australian subsidiary Baulderstone Hornibrook. The cables were supplied by Freyssinet International, the structural steel URSSA. The project management and other control tasks were carried out by COWI Consulting Engineers and Planners AS from Denmark.
The bridge
The Puente Centenario is a 34.10 meter wide six-lane stay cable bridge with a total length of 1052 meters. The main span of the bridge over the Panama Canal is 420 meters with a free passage height of 80 meters. The concrete box girder roadway is supported by steel cables attached to two 184 meter high concrete pylons . Around 66,000 m 3 of concrete, 12,000 tons of steel reinforcement plus 1,000 tons of steel construction parts and 1400 tons of cables were used to build the bridge . During the construction, earthworks to an extent of around 100,000 m 3 were required. After 27 months of construction the bridge was completed and on August 15, 2004 it was inaugurated as planned.
financing
The Panamanian government raised the capital of around US $ 120 million to build the bridge. For this purpose, among other things, a loan of 50 million US dollars was taken out by the European Investment Bank (EIB). This is designed for a repayment of 20 years with a five-year delay in repayment and is guaranteed by the European Community .
