Puente Nuevo

The Puente Nuevo ("New Bridge") is a bridge in the city of Ronda in the Andalusian province of Málaga in southern Spain . The road bridge spans the Río Guadalevín , which separates the old town, La Ciudad , from the younger district of El Mercadillo in the 120-meter-deep El Tajo gorge .

The Puente Nuevo is one of the main tourist attractions of Ronda. It was built in the 18th century as a stone bridge with three arches. The architect was the Spaniard José Martín de Aldehuela (1729–1802), who also designed the bullring in Ronda. The bridge was started in 1751 and was not completed until 1793. It is one of the three bridges over the gorge. The bridge is made of ashlar stones that were broken in the gorge itself. A bridge with an arch 35 meters in diameter was built in front of the Puento Nuevo in 1735 under King Philip V. The construction work lasted eight months, but the bridge collapsed again six years later. About 50 people died in the process.
