content

Brigitte Gliesche, born in 1955, died of heart failure at the age of 29. She is shown as a girl who was rather shy and reserved in her youth, but who later developed increasingly into a self-confident woman. As the first of Golzow's children , she became a mother at the age of 17 and raised her son Marcel alone for a few years. After completing her training as a poultry farmer , she soon had to give up this job due to her severe heart disease and was given various sheltered places .

The film shows her life in a touching way. You can see Brigitte going to school, completing her apprenticeship, having her first child and later building a house with her husband. There is cautious information about her untimely death, which is precisely what makes us think about Brigitte. Her life, which should actually be the focus of the film, is now linked to Marcel's life. There are parallels between Brigitte's life and that of her son. Marcel's life is not easy either, and after completing an apprenticeship as a locksmith, he initially cannot find a permanent job. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was in the armed forces and later became a welder for a waste disposal company. Marcel's first child, Florian, was born with a disability, had a deformed head and had to undergo multiple operations.

The film cautiously accompanies both Marcel and Brigitte in their pursuit of fulfilling their aspirations in life.

Reviews

“In its quiet drama, the apparently apolitical double portrait of Brigitte and Marcel - Golzow's life paths hits the heart of the viewer. Two modest, eloquent people grow up in front of the tactful, curious camera eye and fight for love and health with quiet perseverance. "

"A thoroughly touching film, which at the same time walks the fine line of emotional exploitation and can also be questioned because of its serial production."
