Puerto Saavedra , also Saavedra , is a city in southern Chile and is located in the Región de la Araucanía . It has about 14,000 inhabitants (2004).

Geography and climate

The port city is about 85 km west of Temuco at the mouth of the Río Imperial , which flows into the Pacific Ocean . 10 km southeast of the city is the lake Lago Budi with its 56 km².

The climate is Mediterranean.

history

Before 1554, large Mapuche communities lived on the islands / peninsulas of Lake Budi. The Spaniards tried to advance into the area from their Imperial fortress . The areas in the area of ​​the Río Imperial could never really be conquered by the Spanish conquistadors. From 1604 to 1880 the Mapuche ruled here practically without restriction.

Settlement began in 1881 and the settlers were mostly German immigrants. Puerto Saavedra was founded in 1895 by Cornelio Saavedra.

On May 22, 1960, the port city of Puerto Saavedra was practically completely destroyed by the heaviest earthquake ever recorded , which also triggered a tsunami in the Pacific.

Attractions

The landscape around Lake Budi with its many small peninsulas and islands offers hiking opportunities. A ferry from Puerto Dominguez runs free to the Huapi Peninsula in the lake. A Mapuche community lives on the island . The four km long sandy beach of Playa Maule is located on the Pacific Ocean . The Cerro Mirador mountain is a lookout point.

economy

In addition to tourism, fishing mainly plays an important economic role.
