Río Imperial is a river in southern Chile in the Región de la Araucanía .

The Río Imperial has a length of around 52 km. It is created by the confluence of the Rio Cautín and the Río Quepe . The Rio Cautín has its source at the 2865 m high Lonquimay volcano . The two rivers join a few kilometers south of Nueva Imperial in the west of Temuco . Immediately afterwards the Río Cholchol flows into it. Finally the mighty river flows into the Pacific Ocean at Puerto Saavedra .

history

The areas in the area of ​​the Río Imperial could never be finally conquered by the Spanish conquistadors . The Mapuche ruled here from 1604 to 1870 . It was not until 1881 that the area around Temuco could be settled with European immigrants.

On May 22, 1960, the port city of Puerto Saavedra was practically completely destroyed by a very severe earthquake .
