The Lonquimay is an active volcano between the National Protected Areas Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello and Reserva Nacional Nalcas in northeast Araucania in Chile . In the south lies the village of Malalcahuello, through which the international pass road CH-181 leads to Argentina . The village of Lonquimay is 21 km to the south-east.

The volcano is surrounded by the volcanoes Tolhuaca (2806 m) in the north and Sierra Nevada (2550 m) and Llaima (3125 m) in the south.

geography

The active volcano is a cone mountain with a truncated elliptical crater, the diameter of which is about 700 meters. It consists mostly of andesite , basalt and dacite .

The southern flank is covered by a narrow glacier over an area of around 30 hectares. Eruptions took place in 1853, 1887, 1889, 1933 and 1940. During the last eruption, which began on December 25, 1988 and lasted two years, the so-called Christmas Crater ( Crater Navidad ) formed northeast of the main crater. Water, which feeds the Río Cautín, collects on the mountain slopes.

Paths to the summit

The ascent to Lonquimay leads over the southeast slope. The starting point is the mountain hut of the Corralco ski center at around 1,600 meters above sea level, to which a gravel road leads and where you have to register and pay a fee for the ascent. The ascent is easy at first, but in the upper third, ash and rubble make it difficult to step safely. A head for heights is required at the summit.

Flora and fauna

The surroundings of the volcano are characterized by araucaria forests ( Araucaria araucana ). In addition, the Chile cedar ( Austrocedrus chilensis ), the plum stone beech ( Prumnopitys andina ), the canelo tree ( Drimys winteri ), the lenga southern beech ( Nothofagus pumilio ) and the coihue southern beech ( Nothofagus dombeyi ) can be found.

Among the encountered in the national park Malalcahuello animals include the Argentine Kamp Fuchs ( Pseudalopex griseus ), the Andean condor ( Vultur gryphus ), the Magellanic woodpecker ( Campephilus magellanicus ), the Chilean budgerigar ( Enicognatus leptorhynchus ) and Puma ( Felis concolor ).
