The Schrotzburg ruin , also known as Diepoldsburg , is the ruin of a spur castle at 693  m above sea level. NHN high northern spur of the Schiener mountain in the district of rails of the municipality of Öhningen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

history

Around the year 800 a Count Scrot, a member of the imperial nobility, owned property in this area; from him the name of the castle is derived.

In the 12th century , a new fortress was built on the site of the former Thietpoldsburg , which must have already existed in 914 and where Bishop Solomon of Constance was imprisoned, which is mentioned in 1393 as Schrotzenburg. Owners of the castle were the barons of Klingenberg , the lords of Schrotzberg and the lords of rails. In 1441, under the rule of the Lords of Rails, the castle was destroyed as a "robbery nest" by the Swabian League of Towns and the village of rails was burned down. Remnants of the walls are still preserved from the former castle complex with a keep on an area of 7.5 by 7.5 meters and a wall thickness of 1.5 meters.
