Weiterdingen Castle (2011)

The Weiterdingen Castle of the Barons von Hornstein is located in Hilzingen -Weiterdingen in the district of Konstanz near Singen am Hohentwiel in Hegau . It is located a few kilometers west of Lake Constance under the Hohenstoffeln and around four kilometers north of the Swiss border.

history

The castle was built in 1683 by Balthasar Ferdinand Freiherr von Hornstein zu den Hohenstoffeln and Grüningen, a direct ancestor of the current owner, as a four-story, nine-axis building with a gable roof and is fully expanded. It is structured on the long sides by a three-axis central risalit and has a cross-shaped floor plan. The south elevation takes up the stairwell. The floors are accessed through longitudinal corridors. Several halls as well as many salons, seminar and living rooms have been preserved with restored stucco ceilings and original oak doors. There are patterned floors in historic oak parquet.

Because of the bankruptcy of the von Hornsteins, the castle and land were foreclosed in 1855. Weiterdinger citizens bought the castle and later sold it to a real estate agent. The Archdiocese of Freiburg acquired the building in 1861 in order to set up a “spiritual penal institution” ( Demeritenhaus ) for priests who had committed criminal offenses. From 1941 to 1945 it was used by the NSDAP . Until 1993 it was a rest home for mothers and was run by Mission Benedictine Sisters von Tutzing . From 1994 to 2007, Weiterdingen Castle was an educational and conference center for young adults. Then Josef Freiherr von Hornstein bought it back from the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Today, Weiterdingen Castle is used as an event location.
