The castle Bodman , also Carolingian royal palace called, is an Outbound castle in Bodman-Ludwigshafen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ).

history

The early medieval royal palace, built in the 9th century at the latest, gained considerable importance in the 9th century under King Ludwig the Pious as the new central location of the Lake Constance area. The Palatinate served a king 13 times as a guest. It is mentioned especially in the years between 879 and 912 as the place of issue of documents. Due to a dispute between the Count Palatine Erchanger and King Conrad I , the place lost more and more of its importance in the 910s. During the Hungarian invasion of Lake Constance in 926, it was - unlike other fortified places in the region - no longer mentioned by contemporary chroniclers. The Palatinate itself stood a little higher and was possibly surrounded by a light wall. On the hill next to it in the lay Urnfield scale hillfort Bodenburg and the so-called neck . The latter was located east of the Bodenburg. It is considered the oldest fortification near Bodman and shows traces of fortification from different eras. But it probably also served to defend the Palatinate. The castle of the Lords of Bodman on a hill west of the Bodenburg was not built until the end of the 13th century.
