description

Trunk with bark
Branch with leaves

Vegetative characteristics

Prumnopitys andina grows as an evergreen tree and reaches heights of about 15 or 21 meters and chest height diameters (DBH) of about 1 meter. The pyramidal to spherical tree crown is usually multi-stemmed; each trunk forms a conical tip. The bark is smooth and black in young trees, but gray to copper-colored and wrinkled with age. The bark on the branches is green for the first two years. The buds are egg-shaped, green and very small.

The leaves on young trees are dark green, stiff and thorn-tipped and about 2 centimeters long. In contrast, the leaves on old specimens are more bluish green and up to 5 centimeters long.

Generative characteristics

Prumnopitys andina is dioecious separate sexes ( diocesan ). The male flowers are terminal and lateral; on 3 to 4 centimeters large blue-gray heads there are seven to eight almost 2 millimeters small yellow flowers. The female flowers are also terminal and axillary; they stand upright in groups of two to six on a 3 cm long stem and are conical and blue-green. The seeds, surrounded by an aril, hang in a bundle in twos to six on light yellow-green stems; they are 15 to 20 millimeters long and green with white raised points.

Occurrence and endangerment

Prumnopitys andina occurs in southern Chile and adjacent areas in Argentina. It occurs in the Chilean regions of Región del Maule (35 ° 52 'S) over the Región del Bío-Bío to the Región de la Araucanía (39 ° 30' S). The location information from the Argentine province of Neuquén was assessed as a misinterpretation and this location is also in Chile.

Prumnopitys andina thrives at low to medium altitudes in forests of the Andes at altitudes of 200 to 1380 meters. There are always small populations with a few hundred specimens at most.

Prumnopitys andina was in 2013 in the endangered Red List species the IUCN rated as "Vulnerable" = "endangered." In 2013, around 10,000 adults were estimated and populations are declining.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1847 under the name ( Basionym ) Podocarpus andinus by Eduard Friedrich Poeppig in Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher : Synopsis Coniferarum , page 219. The new combination to Prumnopitys andina (Poepp. & Endl.) De Laub. was published in 1978 by David John de Laubenfels in Blumea , Volume 24, Issue 1, page 189. Among other things, since the genus assignment of this species has been changed several times, there are several synonyms for Prumnopitys andina (Poepp. & Endl.) De Laub. are: Podocarpus spicatus Poepp. non R.Br. , Prumnopitys elegans Phil. , Podocarpus valdivianus J. Nelson , Nageia andina (Poepp. Ex Endl.) F. Muell. , Stachycarpus andinus (Poepp. Ex Endl.) Tiegh. , Nageia valdiviana (J. Nelson) Kuntze , Prumnopitys spicata (Poepp.) Molloy et Muñoz-Schick .

use

In the British Isles , Prumnopitys andina is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
