history

The old Imperial (1551–1600)

The city was originally founded by Pedro de Valdivia under the name "La Imperial" in 1551 on a hill above the Imperial River. Since the city was in the middle of the Mapuche settlements, it was exposed to the constant attacks of the defensive natives. Due to the fighting, the city was finally evacuated and left behind in 1600.

Carahue (from 1882)

After the conquest of the Mapuche areas by the Chilean military, the city was founded again in 1882 by General Gregorio Urrutia. As a name he chose the term “Carahue” (“Where there was a place before”) from the Mapuche language to remind of the ancient city of Imperial. The aim of the new establishment was the establishment of an inland port and export center. The port lost much of its importance as a result of the earthquake in 1960 .

Currently, the city of Carahue is the commercial center of the municipality and the neighboring villages. The community is best known as a potato growing area ("En Carahue está la papa").

Attractions

Bishopric of Imperial

The Diocese of Imperial was founded on March 22, 1564 on the instructions of Pope Pius IV as the second diocese of the country. In 1600 the bishopric was evacuated with the rest of the city. Years later, between 1840 and 1851, Franciscan missionaries came . When they found the ruins of the Imperial Bishopric, they built a new church on the same site, which was completed in 1931. Due to the destruction of the earthquake in 1960, the church had to be rebuilt, in 1998 and 2003 it was redesigned.

Museum of the Steam Age

Based on a vision of the old mayor of the city, Ricardo Herrera Floody, the Museum of the Age of Steam was created in 1999. The exhibition shows a large number of steam engines that have meanwhile become one of the landmarks of the city of Carahue. Some of the newly restored machines still work and are demonstrated on various occasions and celebrations.

Eduardo Frei Montalva suspension bridge

The Eduardo Frei Montalva suspension bridge is located on the outskirts of Carahue . This was built in 1946 and inaugurated in 1949. In 2000 the bridge was renamed Puente Eduardo Frei Montalva in honor of the then president . At the ends of the bridge 4 lion statues were attached, which are supposed to represent the virtues of power, justice, wisdom and moderation .

Railway Museum

There is a small railway museum right next to the Eduardo Frei Montalva suspension bridge. In addition to two steam locomotives of British and German design (Baldwin and Henschel), there are also wagons, cranes and heating wagons on display.

Coastal road

The municipality has several beaches on the seaside: Moncul, Casa de Piedra, Hueñalihuén, Lobería, Los Obispos and Coi-Coi. The beaches are accessible via the coastal road that runs to the sea on both sides of the Rio Imperial. However, the waves are usually very high and the water is rather too cool for swimming because of the cold current. Alongside the coastal road, however, there are partly untouched natural forests and beautiful hilly landscapes.
