The port of Puerto de Cutuco is located in the Bay of La Union on the Gulf of Fonseca in El Salvador .

history

The port was built in 1915 by the International Railways of Central America (IRCA) and then operated for many years as a terminal station for freight and, in some cases, passengers. In 1962 the new port of Acajutla was opened in El Salvador . As a result, the port of Cutuco lost its importance and the IRCA ceased its rail traffic.

The further loss of traffic finally led to the state of El Salvador taking over the port in 1975 and placing it under the administration of the Commision Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA) and building a road connection to the Panamericana . The cargo traffic this year was 177 ships with a turnover of 235,549 MT of export and import goods. Export goods were mainly domestic products such as cotton and coffee , the imports that were handled there were mostly fertilizers, oil and iron.

A new port facility is currently being built, which includes a storage area with a total of one million square meters for the interim storage of merchandise. The planning was completed by CEPA in 2008. Construction began in 2009 and completion is scheduled for 2015. After commissioning, this new port will also be managed by CEPA and then run under the name Puerto La Unión Centroamericana .
