List of domestic dogs

The Puggle is a hybrid dog from the United States that results from crossbreeding between a Pug and a Beagle . The name Puggle is made up of the parts "Pug" (from Pug; English for pug) and "-gle" (from gle; last 3 letters of Beagle).

The puggle is not a dog breed in the strict sense and is therefore not recognized by the FCI or any other larger cynological organization.

Origin and history

Puggle have been bred in America since the 1980s . The background was - similar to the Labradoodle - the breeding of an "allergy-friendly" dog, which is supposed to be better tolerated by people with an animal hair allergy . Investigations on the fur of these dogs could not confirm this claim, however: The amount of allergen in the fur of Puggles does not differ from that in the fur of other dogs. According to current knowledge, a hypoallergenic dog does not exist. The aim of the mating was also to compensate for the unhealthy development (including the short nose) that many pug breeds have with the crossing of the beagle. The breeder's wish was and is a small dog that has the positive pug characteristics and at the same time is fitter and healthier than pugs often are.

Crossbreeds between Pug and Beagle as well as crossbreeds between Puggle and Puggle are carried out. These are called F1 and F2. An F1 dog is a cross between a Pug and a Beagle and an F2 dog is a cross between two F1 Puggles.

Health

Puggle can live an average of 10-15 years. Both beagles and pugs can inherit progressive retinal atrophy, so reputable breeders can get a DNA test for this condition. Pugs can also inherit hip dysplasia from one or both parents. If the allergies are severe, special diets, prescription drugs, or steroid vaccinations may be required.

Puggles that have longer snouts like the Beagle parent are at a reduced risk of breathing difficulties, but puggles can occasionally have the respiratory disease common in Pugs (a breed known for its brachycephaly), a non-threatening respiratory disease that Puggles sometimes have , is reverse sneezing (also called backward sneezing or inspirational paroxysmal breathing).
