Raw powder mass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raw powder mass is a moist mixture of nitrocellulose and explosive oils (water content approx. 35%) before adding stabilizers. It serves as the starting product for the production of polybasic propellant powder .

After the First World War , the still larger stocks of raw powder mass were mixed with sodium nitrate or potassium perchlorate to produce an explosive that could be used by civilians . The detonation can only be achieved with a strong detonator . In addition, raw powder was used instead of collodion for the production of blasting gelatine .

Raw powder mass with at least 25% water has the UN number 0159, those with at least 17% ethanol have UN number 0433. For safety reasons, raw powder mass must contain at least 25% water (transport moisture). If the moisture content falls below 20%, the mechanical sensitivity increases. If the moisture content is below 10%, the raw powder mass is sensitive to friction and impact as well as sensitive to electrostatic discharge. If the raw powder mass is dried with warm air before further processing, the temperature of the raw powder mass must not exceed 45 ° C according to DGUV regulation 113-017 ("Activities with explosives"). In addition, there must be no dangerous accumulation of explosive oil condensates in the exhaust air .
